More than a thousand COVID-19 infections on end-of-year trips to Mallorca

The Balearic Executive has defended this Monday the legality of the resolution approved by the Directorate of Public Health ordering the forced confinement in solitary confinement, under police custody, in the hotel Palma Bellver of the more than 200 students who were still on a study trip in Mallorca, considering them close contacts of those who had tested positive on their return to the Peninsula.

After the mother of one of the isolated San Fernando (Cádiz) students presented a complaint in the guard court against the Government for illegal detention and prevarication, the regional vice president and judge Juan Pedro Yllanes has defended as “impeccable and in accordance with current legislation” the resolution that protects these isolations.

If Yllanes has predicted “Little route” to the proceedings, because the resolution is covered by the legislation in force in the Balearic Islands as a result of the epidemic, the Balearic Minister of Health, Patricia gomez, has argued that “The Government acts with public health criteria, to protect citizens”.

Gómez explained that, since the Government had knowledge of the macro outbreak and that there could be people in Mallorca with a direct or indirect relationship with it, the detection of positives and isolation of close contacts “to cut the chain of infections. We have done it this way since the beginning of the pandemic: when a case is identified, it is isolated and, when a contact is identified, they are requested to quarantine ”.

The head of the health network has stressed that the positivity of the PCR tests carried out so far on young people placed in isolation in Palma reaches 26.1%, which implies that “one in four has tested positive”

“Bridge Hotel”

This Monday rises to 249 the number of peninsular youth, of which 165 have been related to the outbreak, who have been transferred to the so-called Palma’s “bridge hotel”. There are also another 13 awaiting transfer and three who left for the Peninsula on Saturday and are pending location.

Of those 249, at the moment PCR tests have been done and 175 have been negative, 62 positive and 12 are awaiting the results. Among the positives, 12 have been admitted to the Son Espases Hospital “With initially mild symptoms.”

The counselor stressed that the students who are in isolation do so “in a 4-star hotel on the Paseo Marítimo” in Palma and has defended that “what citizens want is answers and forcefulness to protect health and safety, and in that sense all the decisions are being taken ”.

The Balearic Government has enabled an information telephone number for those affected: 900 700 222
