Rio-Cusco and Foz do Iguaçu-Cusco via Bolivia

The company. Bolivian air Amaszonas (the name is a play on “Amazonas” with “more zones” in Spanish) started two direct routes to Brazil:

Written like this, this news doesn’t have much impact: Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the country’s financial capital, is a destination for business travelers. In Bolivia, the destinations that interest Brazilian tourists are La Paz and the Salar de Uyuni.

But see what’s behind it: from now on, these are also the most direct routes from Brazil to Cusco. Instead of connecting in Lima (where you have to go through immigration, pick up your bags, change terminals at the airport), the connection is in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the hub of Amaszonas.

In Santa Cruz you are in the area of international traffic, without struts. You will only go through immigration in Cusco (which receives very few international flights), and the bags go straight there. Speaking of suitcases, all Amaszonas tickets include a suitcase of up to 23 kg, even at the most economical rate.

The routes Rio de Janeiro-Cusco and Foz do Iguaçu-Cusco they were certainly created to serve tourists from other continents that make the basic circuit of South America, saving a stop in Lima.

But these routes are very welcome for locals who want to go straight to Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, without visiting Lima.

And they also open up a very interesting possibility for all Brazilians: why not combine Foz do Iguaçu and Machu Picchu, two wonders of the continent, on the same trip?
