Maria Siklos still remembers what it used to look like near the banks of the Danube: “It was totally run down and terrible. There were storage buildings and empty lots. But the location was beautiful.” It was there, shortly after the turn of the millennium, that the National Theater (Nemzeti Színház) was built based on designs by the now 83-year-old architect. It was the beginning of a new era. Siklos is practically a midwife of modern Budapest.
