Xapuri – quite piece of Brazil

Xapuri is a neat small town of little wooden houses. Some years ago Chico Mendes lived and died here (he was local hero, who fought human and labor rights). It lies about 12km northwest of Highway BR-317, the main road between Rio Branco (241km away) and Brasiléia (74km away).

Fundação Chico Mendes

It has some personal belongings of Chico Mendes, portraits and photos of his family, spouse and babies. It also has his clothes and some things covered in blood when he was murdered, few prises and awards given to him before and after Mendes died.

Museu do Xapuri

The building of museum was the city hall for 70 years till 2000. It looks nice and got interesting exposition that explains how the city situated at the merger of two rivers, was once a large transport hub for rubber, nuts, wood and other products.

Casa Chico Mendes

This plain wood house is a place where Chico Mendes lived with his wife until he died here in 1988. Guide can tell a story of how that happened, you can even still see blood in the house. Across the street there is Chico Mendes Fundação.

This is condom factory, it gives jobs to local people, and manufacturing process is interesting to see.
